Louisa May Alcott |
| Quilts of her life, her
work, her heart |
| by Terry Clothier
Thompson |
|
This new book looks at the Civil War
years thru the eyes of Louisa May Alcott. Louisa is best known
for writing children's stories, and the "Little Women" novel, but
she was also very involved with the anti-slavery movement, rights
for women, and served as a Civil War nurse.
The heart of the book is a the "Louisa"
quilt. In this quilt there are nine "cameo" blocks that tell
the story of Louisa and her family's life in New England. Also
as a part of the quilt, there are 6 pieced blocks from the Civil
Ware era that can be used to make soldiers quilts. Along with
the "Louisa" quilt, the book contains patterns for 3 authentic
soldiers quilts and another magnificent appliquéd quilt call
"Concord, Mass."
For each "cameo" on the "Louisa"
quilt, Terry includes her own commentary about the block to go along
with quotes from noted historians and Louisa herself. "Louisa
May Alcott: Quilt of Her Life, Her Work, Her Heart" tells the
story of an influential woman who touched the world in ways few
people know about. If you love women's history and quilt
history this book will interest you. |
